Heated shots (also referred to as flame shot or fire shot) are brightly glowing, red-hot cannonballs used to start fire on enemy ships.
Every ship has a Brazier, a metal crate with a fire lit inside, usually located alongside a wall or mast. By picking up a cannonball and placing it in the brazier, then allowing it to sit for 3 minutes, that cannonball will become a Heated Shot. Three cannonballs at a time can be heated. When the 3 minutes has passed, pressing E allows you to pick up the Heated Shot, which can then be loaded into any Cannon which already has Gunpowder inside it.
Heated shots have a maximum range of 500 meters. Any shot fired over this distance will not count as a miss, but instead reward zero points, stating "Too far for fire."
On successfully hitting an enemy ship, the heated shot will start a small flame, which spreads in a semicircular pattern on the ship's deck up to a distance of around two meters, and may also spread to the sails if given enough time. Players who stand in, or too close to the fire will also be lit on fire, which will start rapidly draining their health; a burning player will scream for help and their screen will turn red.
Fire on the deck and on players can be extinguished by throwing a bucket of water on the burning deck/player, by allowing the ship to sink low enough in the sea that the water covers the flames, or by a player submersing themselves in the sea water (and then climbing back aboard the ship via the ropes, if they jumped off the ship). It is also possible for a player to heal themselves repeatedly and wait until they stop burning. Fire on the sails cannot be extinguished, and you must wait for it to burn out the sail completely before you can begin repairs.
